Quick Disconnects For Less Than $5.00 Short Cuts

One of the first and easiest off-road upgrades that needs to be done to your stock Grand Cherokee is the addition of quick disconnects for your front anti-sway bar. On the road, the anti-sway bar acts to reduce body lean, but off highway, the anti-sway bar restricts the articulation of the front suspension.

Old sway bar bolts

Slide under the front of your ZJ and locate your anti-sway bar. It runs horizontally across the front of your Jeep, but you can only see the ends where they protrude out of the subframe. On each end of the sway bar is a vertical bar, fastened to the axle by one of these bolts with a Torx55 head.

You need to remove these two bolts, one on each end of the sway bar.  They have a Torx55 head and a 18mm nut.  I didn't have a 18mm socket, but a 3/4" socket or an adjustable wrench will work just fine.  Unfasten the bolts and remove them.  There may be a slight tension on the sway bar. If there is, just tap the bolts out with a small hammer.

Your friendly neighborhood hardware store should be able to locate the tine pins that you will need to replace the old sway bar bolts.  These pins have several holes drilled along their length, into these holes can be placed hitch pins.  The hitch pins will 'lock' the tine pins in place.  I bought 2 tine pins (2.5" X 7/16"), 4 washers (7/16"), and 2 hitch pins of appropriate size to clip onto the tine pins.  The tine pins are sometimes called clevis pins.

With one washer on the tine pin, push the pin through the hole in the bracket and sway bar.  Place the second washer over the end of the pin and then clip the hitch pin onto the tine pin.  Be sure to take the slack out of the length of the pin so that you will keep free-play to a minimum.

That is all there is to it.  When you arrive at your off-road destination, it is an easy matter to disconnect your anti-sway bar.  Just pull the hitch pin, slip the washer off, and pull the pin out. Be sure that you put the pins in a secure place while you are off-roading.  I speak from experience when I say that the drive home can induce sea-sickness if you can't find them, and thus cannot reconnect the anti-sway bar.

This easy modification should be worth at least 100 points on the Ramp Travel Index.
