West Mountain Proposed ATV Motocross Track and Trail System Public Scoping Meeting
Salt Lake City, Utah (Dec 11,2009) —The Bureau of Land Management, Salt Lake Field Office announces a public scoping meeting for a proposed ATV motocross track and trail system on West Mountain. The meeting will be held on Jan. 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Payson City Center, City Council Chambers, 439 West Utah Avenue, Payson, UT 84651. For directions, please call 801-465-5200.
Utah County is proposing an ATV motocross track and trail system at West Mountain as part of a county park system. A parcel at the south end of West Mountain, west of Payson Utah, has been identified to be used as the site for the motocross track facility. The proposed project would provide a track for ATV and motorcycle competitions, areas for recreational riding, parking, spectator seating, staging areas and restrooms. A Cooperative Agreement is being developed among Utah County, Payson City, the Bureau of Land Management, Utah State Parks, and private groups to design and construct this facility.
To complement the ATV motocross track, Utah County proposes designating a 26-mile loop trail around the base of West Mountain, connecting existing roads and trails with new construction to complete the loop. In addition to the main trail, existing spur trails and internal loops on and across the mountain would provide added recreational driving, walking, hiking and mountain biking. The trail would cross lands administered by the BLM’s Salt Lake Field Office, West Desert District Office, the state of Utah’s School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, and private lands. Duplicate, unneeded, or inappropriate routes would be identified for reclamation.
The public scoping period ends on Feb. 15, 2010. To ensure that comments will be considered, the BLM must receive written comments by Feb. 15, 2010.

The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
