You are the solution to saving trails

DO NOT LEAVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE!

JOIN, DONATE and VOLUNTEER are the key words in this message, and quite honestly, they are THE solution to stopping trail closures.

We must stop waiting to get involved until a "gate" is in our back yard or on our favorite spot.  I know it is easier to get riled up when their is an "enemy" looking us in the face, but the tide of closure moves slowly and moves even without a face attached to it.  It is insidious -- sneaky.

Perfect 4-Wheel Drive Weekend

Enjoying the view and a glass of wine after a day on the trail.

What makes the perfect 4WD trip? Close your eyes and think about that for a moment. Picture the ideal off-road adventure. What does it look like?

I got to thinking about this the other day. I had just returned from a couple days off road. I was sitting in my favorite chair, with my feet up and my left hand occupied with some of nature’s golden nectar. While relaxing (meaning, the tequila was kicking in), I had the chance to reflect. It dawned on me that, yeah, this is a pretty neat hobby. Four wheeling allows us to escape the grind of urban life for a few hours and become immersed in Mother Nature. Just can’t beat it.

Early morning is for ducks

The stars provided the only light in the dark skies as we finished loading the truck.  Orion’s Belt stood out among the stars with nary a hint of clouds.  By the time we reached the boat launch area, the lights from Mountain Home AFB provided a bright glow in the western sky while the hint of a rising sun was visible in the eastern sky.  The waters of CJ Strike Reservoir were dark as we loaded the boat and set out for the marsh area.  We had a lot of work to do before sunrise and the beginning flights of ducks.

Impressive Base Camp Selection

Base Camp
Very nice level, sheltered camp at 10,000 feet in the pines with lots of room.

Because many 4WD excursions last two days or more, there’s usually the need to select a campsite arrangement. You can elect to go with a base camp, or set up camp at a different location each night (what I call a cruise or a moving camp).

Another option is a hybrid variety. This is handy for really long excursions, say in excess of seven days. Use a base camp for a few days, then a moving camp for other days in your trip.
